Cardiac Tamponade Secondary to Umbilical Vein Catheterization in a Premature Newborn: A Case Report

چکیده
Received May 19, 2001 Abstract We report a premature newborn who developed circulatory collapse 46 hours after birth due to cardiac tamponade. Echocardiography revealed large circumferential pericardial effusion. Pericardiocentesis yielded 12 ml of clear straw-colored fluid with high glucose level of 102.9 mmol/L. The neonate improved after the procedure. Pericardial tamponade is a rare complication related to umbilical vein catheter. Nevertheless, this life-threatening complication has to be suspected in newborn presenting with shock after umbilical vein catheterization.

Cardiac tamponade in a newborn because of umbilical venous catheterization: is correct position safe?
Cardiac tamponade is a rare but life-threatening complication of umbilical venous catheterization in the newborn. Most complications from central venous catheters are related to incorrect position of the catheter and it is emphasized to confirm the position of the catheter tip after placement in order to avoid possible complications. We present an unusual complication of cardiac tamponade becau...

We present a case of cardiac tamponade following umbilical venous catheterization in a neonate, an uncommon, yet potentially fatal complication. Timely diagnosis by echocardiography and urgent pericardiocentesis proved lifesaving.

Cardiac tamponade secondary to the use of central venous catheter is a rare complication; however, it is potentially reversible when it is caught in time. We report two cases of cardiac tamponade that was diagnosed using a transthoracic echocardiography, followed by urgent pericardiocentesis and surgical pericardial drainage as a complication from umbilical venous catheterization. In one case, ...

Although umbilical venous catheterization is a routine procedure in premature newborns, it is associated with various, potentially life threatening, complications. We present a case of a premature baby diagnosed with a hepatic parenchymal liquid collection as a complication of umbilical vein catheterization in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The child was born in the 25th gestational week (GW...

Umbilical and supraumbilical catheter insertion is a common procedure performed in the NICU. It is a safe and usually easy procedure devoid of serious mishaps, morbidity and mortality. Complications such as hemorrhage, infection, hernia, evisceration, omphalitis, portal vein thrombosis and portal hypertension may occur after umbilical catheter insertion. Other uncommon and rare complications re...
